Rapid Spray Tan vs. Regular Spray Tan: What’s the Difference?

Posted on june 14, 2026
If you’ve ever booked a spray tan and been asked, “Do you want regular or rapid?” you may have wondered what the difference actually is.
Does rapid mean you get tan faster? Is it darker? Does it last as long? And why would you choose one over the other?
The biggest difference is simple: a rapid spray tan allows you to rinse sooner.
Both types of spray tans use DHA to create your actual tan, but rapid formulas are designed for a much shorter wear time before that first rinse.
At Designer Lashes in Scottsdale, we use professional SunFX spray tanning solutions, including rapid options, so we can customize your tan based on your skin tone, schedule, and desired color. Here’s what you need to know.
What Is a Regular Spray Tan?
With a traditional spray tan, the tanning solution stays on your skin for several hours before your first shower. During that time, you’ll want to avoid getting wet, sweating, working out, applying skincare products, or doing anything that could disturb the developing tan.
That means planning your appointment around your day. For many clients, getting sprayed in the evening and rinsing later or the following morning can work beautifully.
But sometimes you simply don’t want to spend that long in "spray tan mode"—and that’s where rapid comes in.
What Is a Rapid Spray Tan?
A rapid spray tan is formulated so you can complete your first rinse much sooner than with a traditional solution. With SunFX rapid solutions, your exact rinse time will depend on the formula used, your skin, and the depth of color you’re looking for.
After your recommended rinse time, you shower and remove the cosmetic bronzer from your skin.
The Important Part: Rinsing doesn’t mean your tan is finished developing. Your actual color continues developing after that first shower and can continue deepening over the following hours. If you step out of the shower and think, “Where did my tan go?” don’t panic—that’s completely normal!
Does a Rapid Spray Tan Develop Faster?
This is probably the biggest misconception about rapid tans.
“Rapid” refers primarily to how soon you can rinse the solution off, not how quickly you see your final color. Your tan still needs time to fully develop after that first rinse.
Think of rapid as giving you more freedom after your appointment rather than instantly giving you your final tan.
Is a Rapid Spray Tan Darker?
Not necessarily. Rapid doesn’t automatically mean darker.
The depth of your finished tan depends on several factors:
- Your natural skin tone
- The specific tanning solution used
- Proper application & rinse timing
- How your individual skin responds to DHA
At Designer Lashes, the goal isn’t simply to make you as dark as possible—we want your color to look natural on you. Whether you want a subtle “I spent the weekend somewhere sunny” glow or a deeper bronze for a vacation or event, your spray tan can be customized accordingly.
Does Rinsing Later Make a Rapid Tan Darker?
With a rapid formula, rinse timing can influence the result, which is why it’s important to follow the instructions you’re given at your appointment.
Leaving the solution on longer isn’t something you should automatically do just because you want to be darker. Set a timer on your phone and stick strictly to your recommended rinse window.
Does a Rapid Spray Tan Last as Long as a Regular Spray Tan?
Yes, it can. How long your spray tan lasts depends much more on your skin preparation and aftercare than whether you chose rapid or traditional.
To Help Extend Your Tan:
- Exfoliate thoroughly before your appointment
- Follow your recommended rinse time
- Keep your skin moisturized daily
- Avoid aggressive exfoliation afterward
- Take shorter, warm showers rather than long, very hot ones
- Pat your skin dry with a towel
- Be gentle when shaving
- Remember that pools, hot tubs, and frequent swimming fade color faster
Why Choose a Rapid Spray Tan?
For many clients, it’s simply more convenient. A rapid tan may be perfect if you:
- Don’t want to sleep in your spray tan solution
- Have plans later in the day
- Don’t want to stay in loose spray tan clothes for hours
- Want to shower before bed
- Have a busy schedule or are prepping for a trip
- Are living in Scottsdale: When it’s over 100 degrees outside, spending all day trying not to sweat while your tan develops is definitely not ideal!
What Happens During the First Shower?
Your first shower after a spray tan is really just a rinse. Keep that first shower quick and use lukewarm water.
As the cosmetic bronzer washes away, you may see quite a bit of color going down the drain. That does not mean you’re washing off your tan. The bronzer gives you immediate cosmetic color while your actual DHA tan develops underneath. Once you rinse away the bronzer, your color will continue developing on its own.
When Will I See My Final Color?
Give it time! Your color can continue developing for up to 24 hours after your spray tan, depending on the solution.
The glow you see tomorrow may look quite different from what you see when you step out of the shower tonight, so hold off on judging your finished color right away.
Which Spray Tan Should I Choose Before an Event?
Timing matters when you’re tanning for something important like a wedding, bachelorette party, photoshoot, or vacation.
Tell us what you’re getting ready for and when it's happening, and we can help determine the best appointment timing, solution, color depth, and rinse schedule. If it’s your first spray tan and you’re preparing for a major occasion, a trial tan beforehand is always a great idea.
